The basket itself has no name, only the importer from Zimbabwe is called “Simba”. “Simba” means “lion” in Swahili. But our Simba is a wire basket that the two AUERBERG photographers Thomas Koller and Gisela Schenker discovered in Namibia. The fascinating thing about this basket is its simplicity: three bent wire elements that are connected to each other in a circle, resulting in a multiform, movable structure that presents itself as a new sculpture on the table again and again, depending on the contents. Simba, by the way, does not come from Namibia at all, where it is only sold, but from Zimbabwe and that then explains the name, which is a play on words.
