Vitra, Elephant Grau Sonder Ed.
VITRA, ELEPHANT GRAU SONDER ED.
The Limited Edition Eames Elephant was designed by Charles Eames and Ray Eames for the Vitra brand. Early on, the American designer couple discovered plywood as a material for furniture and conjured up three-dimensional works of art. Thus the original model of the Limited Edition Eames Elephant, which was introduced in 1945, is also made of plywood. Two prototypes caused a sensation when they were presented at the New York Museum of Modern Arts in 1945 and 1946. Today there is only one original left, which is owned by Eames descendants.
Originally conceived as a toy for children, the Limited Edition Eames Elephant quickly caused a furore among adults as well. Its characteristic counter-rotating curves posed a real challenge in production. On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the children’s furniture classic, the Vitra brand launched the coveted Limited Edition Eames Elephant as a tribute to one of the most important designers of the 20th century. The Elephant, which is made of stained molded plywood, exists exactly 999 times. Each model bears a number.
